Eublepharis macularius
Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are fascinating reptiles known for their striking appearance, docile nature, and relatively long lifespan of up to 15 years in captivity. These captivating creatures make excellent pets for reptile enthusiasts of all levels. However, to ensure the health and well-being of your leopard gecko, it's essential to provide them with a suitable environment that meets their specific needs. In this care guide, we’ll explore the details of providing a healthy and enriching environment for your Leopard geckos.
Adult female leopard geckos typically measure about 18 to 20 cm (7.1 to 7.9 in) in length and weigh approximately 50 to 70 grams. In contrast, adult male geckos are slightly larger, ranging from 20 to 28 cm (7.9 to 11.0 in) in length and weighing about 60 to 80 grams. Understanding the size and characteristics of your gecko is crucial for creating an appropriate habitat.

Enclosure
A spacious and secure enclosure is essential for your leopard gecko's well-being. A 20-gallon tank is suitable for a single adult gecko, providing ample space for exploration and exercise. Choose a substrate that is safe for your gecko, options like reptile carpet and paper towels work well. Avoid substrates that can cause impaction, such as loose sand. Provide a temperature gradient within the enclosure, with a warm side ranging from 88°F to 92°F (31°C to 33°C) and a cooler side around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C). Use an under-tank heating pad or ceramic heat emitter to create the warm side of the enclosure. Avoid basking lamps, as leopard geckos are nocturnal and do not bask or require UVB lighting. Include multiple hiding spots and shelters throughout the enclosure to mimic the gecko's natural habitat. Use artificial caves, logs, or hollowed-out rocks for hiding and resting. Incorporate branches, rocks, and artificial plants to create a stimulating and enriching environment for your gecko to explore.
Diet and Hydration
Leopard geckos are insectivores, primarily feeding on live insects such as crickets, mealworms, and roaches. Offer appropriately sized prey items based on the size of your gecko. Feed juvenile geckos daily and adult geckos every other day. Gut-load feeder insects with nutritious foods such as vegetables or commercial gut-load products to enhance their nutritional value. Dust feeder insects with calcium and vitamin supplements to prevent nutritional deficiencies, particularly calcium metabolism disorders like metabolic bone disease.

Handling
Leopard geckos are generally docile and can be easily handled. Approach them gently and avoid sudden movements to prevent stress. Begin with short handling sessions to allow your gecko to become accustomed to being held. Gradually increase the duration as your gecko grows more comfortable.
